UAE Travel Guide

*Disclaimer: this is a guide only and it is your responsibility to ensure you up to date with guidelines*

Relocating with pets can be a complex process, but with proper preparation, you can ensure a smooth transition for your furry friends. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you take your dog or cat from the UK to the UAE.

Step 1: Understand UAE Pet Import Regulations

The UAE has strict regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of imported pets:

  1. Allowed Pets: Only domestic dogs and cats are allowed. Exotic animals are generally prohibited.

  2. Breed Restrictions: Certain dog breeds are banned in the UAE, including:

    • Pit Bull Terrier

    • Japanese Tosa

    • Dogo Argentino

    • Fila Brasileiro

    • Any mixed breed of the above.

Step 2: Prepare Documentation

Ensure you have the following paperwork ready:

  1. Import Permit: Obtain an import permit from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE). Apply online through their portal or through a UAE-based pet relocation service.

  2. Vaccination Records:

    • Dogs: Rabies, Canine Distemper, Canine Hepatitis, Parvovirus.

    • Cats: Rabies, Feline Panleukopenia, Rhinotracheitis, and Calicivirus.

    • Vaccinations must be up-to-date and administered at least 21 days before travel.

  3. Rabies Titer Test:

    • Conducted at least 3 months before travel.

    • Required if the UAE does not consider the UK a rabies-free country.

  4. Microchip:

    • ISO-compliant microchip (15-digit).

    • Implant before vaccination.

  5. Health Certificate:

    • Issued by a UK government-approved veterinarian within 10 days of travel.

    • Certified by the UK Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA).

Step 3: Book Pet-Friendly Travel

  1. Cargo Travel: Pets cannot travel as cabin baggage to the UAE. Arrange for your pet to travel as cargo with an IATA-approved airline.

  2. Pet Travel Crate:

    • Select an airline-approved crate.

    • The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably.

  3. Flight Booking:

    • Book well in advance to secure space for your pet.

    • Direct flights are preferable to minimize stress.

Step 4: Arrange for Quarantine and Clearance

  1. No Mandatory Quarantine:

    • If all documentation is in order, pets do not require quarantine in the UAE.

  2. Customs Clearance:

    • Upon arrival, provide import permits, health certificates, and vaccination records.

    • Pay any applicable customs fees.

Step 5: Prepare Your Pet

  1. Acclimate to the Crate:

    • Introduce your pet to the travel crate weeks before the journey.

    • Encourage them to associate it with comfort and safety.

  2. Vet Check-Up:

    • Schedule a final check-up 10 days before travel.

    • Discuss any sedative options if your pet experiences severe anxiety.

  3. Food and Water:

    • Avoid feeding your pet a large meal right before travel.

    • Provide water, but ensure the crate includes a spill-proof water dispenser.

Step 6: Settling in the UAE

  1. Register Your Pet:

    • All dogs and cats must be registered with the municipality within 30 days of arrival.

    • You’ll need proof of vaccinations and microchip information.

  2. Adjust to the Climate:

    • Gradually introduce your pet to the UAE's hot weather.

    • Limit outdoor activities during peak heat and always provide water and shade.

  3. Find a Veterinarian:

    • Research local veterinary clinics for routine care and emergencies.

Additional Tips

  • Pet Insurance: Explore options for pet insurance coverage in the UAE.

  • Plan Ahead: Start the process at least 4-6 months before your planned move to accommodate any unforeseen delays.

By following this guide, you can ensure a safe and stress-free journey for your beloved pets to their new home in the UAE!
